Molecular and Cell Biology (BMC) is an area in continual development which is at the forefront of knowledge of the Life Sciences. This Masters is designed to provide students with advanced training and theoretical-practical experience of biological processes and mechanisms, with a multidisciplinary and integrating approach to areas such as Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Development Biology, Genetics, Genomics or Molecular Evolution. Its objective is to train future professionals with a deep understanding of the structures and molecular processes of living beings, and in the use of current experimental and bioinformatics tools to study them.
The Masters in Molecular and Cell Biology will allow the student to begin a research career through access to the Doctorate and to train as a scientist in the area of Molecular Biosciences, obtaining the skills required for research or related professional activities. To meet this objective, this Masters offers 3 possible, very flexible itineraries, based on the topics of Structural Molecular Biology (Proteins), Molecular Biology of the Gene (Genes) and Molecular Biology of the Cell (Cells). Furthermore, it has been designed so that half of the credits necessary to attain the degree are obtained through professional training or research projects in laboratories at the UAM or other prestigious Research Centres. (see participating Institutions). These Centres participate in the practical scientific training and may facilitate professional integration.
Since its creation, the UAM has stood out for its research work in the area of Molecular Biosciences and at present. it is the top Spanish University in impact of its scientific publications in this area (See Bibliometric map). Moreover, the research vocation of the UAM in Molecular Biosciences is clear through the existence of two mixed centres UAM-CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas – Spanish Higher Research Council) which are situated on the University Campus: Centro de Biología Molecular “Severo Ochoa” and Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas “Alberto Sols”, Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas “Alberto Sols”, as well as their close collaboration with the most prestigious Research Centres. (see participating Institutions).
This Masters is included in the UAM’s Official Molecular Biosciences Postgraduate Program developed jointly by the Department of Biochemistry (Faculty of Medicine) and the Department of Molecular Biology (Faculty of Sciences) ). Thel Official Molecular Biosciences Postgraduate Program is derived from previous doctorate programs that received a special mention for quality from the Ministry for Education and Science. This new Program also includes the Masters in Molecular Biomedicine (BMM) and Biotechnology (BT). The three Masters share some of the compulsory and optional credits.
