Objectives

Molecular Biomedicine is a scientific area in continual expansion and with an increasing social impact. The objective of this Masters is to cover a key space in the healthcare and research (R+D+i) systems: to train professionals with a solid background in molecular and cellular biomedicine, who can work at the frontier between basic and clinical research, and that are capable of propulsing high quality translational investigation in Hospitals, Universities and Biomedical Research Centres, applicable to the improvement in Healthcare.

This innovative Masters in Molecular Biomedicine goes more deeply into the knowledge and the investigation of the molecular, biochemical, genetic, cellular and pathophysiological mechanisms of disease, and in the development of new procedures applicable to their prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, this Masters offers 6 specific areas of specialisation directed towards different pathologies: Cancer, Immune and Inflammatory Diseases, Neurological Diseases, Genetic Metabolic Diseases, Endocrine Diseases and Cardiovascular Diseases.

The Masters is designed to provide students with theoretical-practical experience in Molecular Biomedicine which will allow them to begin a research career by entering the Doctorate programme and to train as molecular biomedical scientists in the skills required for research work or related professional activities. To meet this objective, half of the credits necessary to obtain the Masters degree are obtained through work experience or research projects in laboratories at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and other prestigious Biomedical Research Centres and University Hospitals (see participating Institutes).

Since its creation, the UAM has stood out for its research work in the area of Molecular Biosciences and at present. it is the top Spanish University in impact of its scientific publications in this area (See Bibliometric map). Moreover, the research vocation of the UAM in Molecular Biosciences is clear through the existence of two mixed centres UAM-CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas – Spanish Higher Research Council) which are situated on the University Campus: Centro de Biología Molecular “Severo Ochoa” and Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas “Alberto Sols”, as well as their close collaboration with the most prestigious Research Centres (see participating Institutionsn).

This Masters is included in the UAM’s Official Molecular Biosciences Postgraduate Program, developed jointly by the Department of Biochemistry (Faculty of Medicine) and the Department of Molecular Biology (Faculty of Sciences) at the UAM. The Official Molecular Biosciences Postgraduate Program is derived from previous doctorate programs that received a special mention for quality from the Ministry for Education and Science. This new Program also includes the Masters in Molecular and Cell Biology (BMC) ) and Biotechnology (BT). The three Masters share some of the compulsory and optional credits.

Skills and capacities acquired in the Masters

  • Professionals will be prepared with a critical scientific spirit and with skills in experimental design, scientific communication and teamwork, as well as a good practical capacity in the research laboratory.
  • Advanced knowledge will be imparted of the Biochemical and Molecular Biology applications to diagnose, treat and prevent human diseases, with emphasis on Genomics and Proteomics applications.
  • Advanced knowledge will be imparted of the cellular, molecular, genetic and pathophysiological bases of human diseases, in each specific area of specialisation.
  • New professional opportunities will be opened in the field of biomedical research in Universities, Research Centres and Hospitals.
  • To provide the opportunity for admission to Doctorate studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
